What is WorldPride?
WorldPride is a global event licensed by InterPride, the International Association of Pride Organisers. It typically includes a Pride parade, a human rights conference, and an extended arts and culture programme, drawing visitors from around the world.
Why is WorldPride 2028 significant?
Cape Town will be the first African city ever to host WorldPride. The bid was awarded in November 2024, when Cape Town Pride won 53 percent of the InterPride membership vote against Guadalajara Pride, Mexico.
When and where will it take place?
Exact 2028 dates have not yet been announced. Past WorldPride events have run for one to two weeks, with Sydney’s 2023 edition lasting 17 days. Cape Town’s annual Pride parade traditionally begins on Alfred Street in De Waterkant and finishes at Green Point Track; it is reasonable to expect WorldPride 2028 to follow a similar route on a larger scale, pending official confirmation.
Who is organising it?
Cape Town Pride is the official host organisation, working with a new nonprofit called Queer Initiative for Africa, InterPride, the City of Cape Town, and Cape Town Tourism.
Has the torch actually been handed over yet?
As of July 2026, Cape Town Pride is in Amsterdam for WorldPride 2026 (24 July to 8 August 2026), where the official handover ceremony takes place at the closing ceremony on 8 August. This is the formal moment preparations begin in earnest for Cape Town.
Is South Africa safe and legal for LGBTQI+ visitors?
Yes. South Africa’s constitution explicitly protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation, and same sex marriage has been legal since 2006.
